Ruth and I took a bit of time to look at the paintings on display. Artists were asked to set an opening bid price and a gallery price. The latter represented the price for direct and immediate sale. We were a bit surprised to see opening bids as low as $25; the average being $40, a very low return on two or more hours of work under difficult condition. Bidding seemed less than enthusiastic in spite of a large crowd and we did see very good work pegged to start at $95 which failed to get a bid let alone sell.
We went next to retrieve Mary from the waterfront where she was now bundled in a warm coat painting the opposite shore of the Annapolis Basin. Her painting did not make the wall until sometime after four in the afternoon. She wanted badly to sell and posted her starting bids at very low levels. I had decided to settle on $50 although I thought this a bit low.
