"And For Lasting Effect - Invite An Artist"

"Next time you are planning a party and wish to be the envy of all your party-throwing friends, invite an artist (i.e. painter). There's nothing quite like an artist for a conversation piece." - Ian Trowell, Financial Post Magazine, December, 1972.

Can you believe? That was in a time when picture painters were very much rare birds in Canada.

The infatuation of the public for artists went on for about two more decades. I did not have to ask for annual publicity in the provincial and the local newspapers, and in those days the spread typically measured 14x17" with loads of photographs. These days the best I can expect is mention as a "professional artist." And by the way, Art Illusions Gallery in Sussex featured my work all that summer. At you can see my work was then largely figurative.

I have just located this momento from 1992 between the pages of a diary I started back in 1970 at the time of my first one-man show. The text will be added to my web page.
